Third Grade Transformation

Third grade begins before DK ever enters Room 3A. Max has moved away, and the friends’ familiar circle now depends on Sunday video calls, messages, and the determination to remain close across the distance. At the same time, an orthodontist appointment leaves DK wearing braces with Brave Kitty red bands. The reflection in the mirror is still his—but it does not feel familiar yet.

When school opens, Mrs. Whiskers introduces a year filled with deeper reading, evidence-based responses, independent work, and a major test already waiting on the calendar. DK arrives carrying a new smile, an empty space where Max once stood, and worry he does not want anyone to notice. Then Finn takes the seat beside him.
