Fourth Grade Growth

On the final Sunday of summer, DK and his friends gather for a video call that stretches across two places. Max is still part of the circle, but distance has changed how the group shares ordinary moments. DK is entering fourth grade with his braces removed, a retainer to manage, and the confidence of someone who has survived major change. He expects growth to feel obvious. Fourth grade quickly proves that becoming older often means receiving responsibilities before feeling fully prepared for them.

In Mrs. Bramble’s classroom, assignments become longer and decisions matter more. Research requires reliable sources instead of the first answer found. Group projects require planning, deadlines, role assignments, and respectful disagreement. DK wants to contribute everywhere, yet he begins learning that being dependable is different from doing everything—and that a strong leader creates the conditions for other people to do their best work.

That lesson becomes personal when Sage joins the class. DK recognizes the uncertainty of being new and wants to make the transition easier, but good intentions are not enough. Helping can become controlling. Speaking for someone can silence them. Through missteps, honest feedback, shifting group roles, and the continuing presence of Max from afar, DK learns to ask before acting, listen for strengths, share responsibility, and make belonging something the whole group builds together.
